WHAT TO WEAR FOR FALL FAMILY PHOTOS IN AUSTIN, TEXAS

I always get this question!! Truth be told, I don’t care THAT much what my people wear for their photos. When I photograph a family, my main goal is to catch love, connection, fun, personalities, and of course that one classic family photo of everyone looking at the camera. I feel like if I’ve done my job well, clothing is hardly noticeable past all the genuine emotion the images show. That said, I want YOU to love your photos and I’d be lying if I said amazing outfits didn’t take it up a notch.

I LOVE when moms and girls wear something flowy. It adds movement to the photos and makes them more real.

But if you are really going for a casual look or don’t want to wear something flowy, we can still get some good movement and real-ness in your images, so not to worry if this isn’t your cup of tea!

Generally, mom’s outfit comes first and then the rest sort of falls into place around that. So let’s talk colors. A lot of people go with navy, light blue and cream tones. That’s a safe bet, for sure! But what I love is a standout fall color on mom or baby, something a little bolder but still complimentary to being out in nature. I love deep reds (like the photo above, mustards, burnt oranges (and I’m not just saying that because, Hook ‘em!) and stripes. Loooove stripes! Consider thinking outside the box with some orange, yellow or deep khaki. Even if you’re not a longhorn, tell me the burnt orange on this baby girl isn’t stunning with her blue eyes and the green grass!

Once you’ve chosen a standout color or pattern, you can play off of it for the rest of the outfits. I love this handy color chart of coordinating colors because it has some combos that you might not think of. I found it on Pinterest- there are a ton of these available but this one is my favorite for fall. This one doesn’t show a red option, but I think if you do that, everyone else can be pretty neutral.

As far as pulling it all together, I recommend one person having a noticeable/bold pattern and the rest being solids or a subtle pattern. Maybe with a stripe mixed in.

I hope this helps! Above all, I recommend everyone being comfortable in what they’re wearing, as long as it’s not neon or showing a large graphic/logo. Those things distract from what we’re really trying to capture, right? Even more important than your outfits is mental prep- but that’s another post for another day! Let me know in the comments if this post was helpful!

FRESH 48 SESSIONS WITH CAPTURED AUSTIN

How does a FRESH48 session work?

What is a FRESH48 session anyway?

As a photographer I have been hearing this term for a while, and I realized recently that most people have no idea what it means! A FRESH48 session is a candid and relaxed photo session of your baby within 48 hours of birth- usually in the hospital room or birthing center room. I LOVE these sessions, as a mother and as a photographer and lover of babies and new families. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of this post to read all the details and see some of my favorite FRESH48 photos!

Barring complications, those first couple of days in the hospital can be so serene and euphoric. I think most parents remember the jarring reality of returning home with their new baby to pets, toddler siblings, and household chores on little to no sleep! I just adore capturing that time when parents are focused on nothing but getting to know each little feature of the new human they created.

How does a FRESH48 session work? I will tell you! First, you get your due date on my calendar. I commit to being able to show up within 48 hours as long as you deliver within a week of your due date (so the two week window from 39 weeks to 41 weeks, in general). Of course, if you deliver outside this window there’s a good chance I’ll still be able to be there! I will move mountains to show up to these things, that’s how much I love it.

You’ll let me know when you go into labor and when baby arrives (I’m easily accessible via text!) and we’ll set a loose time for me to come do the photo session. I remain fairly flexible around that time since babies need to feed and be seen by the nurses- not always on our schedule!

My favorite things to capture at these sessions are the parents and older siblings taking in the little features of their new little buddy, and also how tiny the new baby is in those first few days. I take plenty of shots of family bonding with the baby, but also shots of the baby by himself- since it is his big debut after all!

I always do these sessions during the day to use the (surprisingly) amazing natural light from the hospital room window. I always get the dreamiest light and shadows in these rooms.

After the session, I will edit a few photos right away and text them to you so that the first photos you share withfamily and friends will be connection-based, natural light, beautiful photos of your new family.

Spring family mini-session at Town Lake Trail

Is a mini-session the best option for your family?

This adorable family of three booked a spring mini session with me and I couldn’t have been happier with how it went! Baby girl showed up all smiles and not shy at all. I always ask parents to be ten minutes early to mini-sessions since the time is so limited, and my families are so awesome about it! We got right to work and were able to create a gorgeous gallery with a lot of variety. These guys are the perfect example of who mini-sessions benefit. One kid (who can’t run away from me yet!) and who warms up quickly, on time, and totally game for whatever I asked them to do!

With my minis, I include five digital files with the session price (usually $200), and the full gallery is available for purchase for an additional $150 (you get to decide after you see it). So it’s a great way to play it safe expense-wise and see what you get. It’s also a great way to update your family photos if you’ve recently done a full session and you know your kiddos will warm up right away!
